Domain Name

What happens when a domain name expires?

A domain expires when its renewal isn’t paid in time. If it stays unpaid, it can be deleted, and someone else can register it. Getting it back can be costly and slow, so it pays to renew on time.

What stops working

  • Your website. Visitors can’t reach it.
  • Your email. If you use addresses on this domain (like info@yourbusiness.com), you can’t send or receive mail, whoever your email provider is.
  • Your hold on the name. If it isn’t renewed in time, someone else may be able to grab it.

Is there a grace period?

Sometimes. Right after a domain expires, there may be a short window to renew it at the normal price. It doesn’t last long, so don’t wait.

Can I get it back after that?

Maybe. After the grace period, most domains go into a “redemption period.” That’s a last chance to recover the domain before it’s released to the public. A redemption fee applies.

How to avoid it

We email a renewal reminder at least 7 days before the due date. Save a card and turn on automatic payments in your client portal, and it renews on its own.
